Welcome to the first installment of “Deeper Under the Covers.” If you are getting this post in your mailbox, be sure to checkout the new page at quazillabynorth.com, which gives you the skinny on what this is all about!
I discovered this amazing guitarist in December, 2022 just as I was thinking about creating this new page dedicated to the covers of songs from the past. Lucas started playing the guitar at ten years old and by the time he was fifteen he had won 1st prize at the national Brazilian guitar competition. With a scholarship in hand, he went to study music in Barcelona, Spain where he mastered both classical and flamenco guitar. and performing all over the world. Looking for a new path, he learned how to sing, play Rock’n’Roll, and fingerstyle guitar, releasing a couple of rock albums. In 2020 he posted several videos of YouTube playing classic Rock songs using the fingerstyle technique, which gained more than 20 million views in a year! While his playing is some of the best work on a guitar I have ever seen, it is also his body language, and the expressions on his face while he is playing that demonstrate his devotion to his craft and his love of music. I have chosen four particular covers for this month’s installment: “Classical Gas,” by Mason Williams (1968); “Stairway to Heaven,” by Led Zeppelin (1971); “Sultans of Swing,” Dire Straits (1978), “Hotel California,” Eagles (1977). Enjoy!
I certainly hope you’ve enjoyed the trip down memory lane and these covers! Until next time.

I do enjoy it when finger style guitarists do pop songs. He is a remarkable talent. They do love their guitar in Spain (so it’s no surprise he did well there), you’d think they invented the thing;).

You’re welcome, one of the highlights of my musical experiences is seeing “Four Guitars” in Barcelona.

I’ll bet that was amazing. Was in Barcelona in 2018, for a couple of nights, beautiful city. I got to see Carlos Montoya in Montreal many, many years ago.

As a short story writer, I am constantly in awe of the talented musicians out there in the world. Reading about Lucas Imbiriba and his journey as a Brazilian guitarist has left me feeling inspired and motivated to continue honing my own craft. It’s clear that Lucas has a true passion for music and it shows in the way he plays and performs. I can’t wait to check out the covers he’s chosen for this month’s installment and see how he brings new life to these classic songs.
